Wastelands - Review by Stephen Morgan of Incision
Promotions
"In the tradition of great Australian bands like
The Reels, Midnight Oil and The Triffids, Big Room have managed to
create their own brand of classic rock, adding just a hint of darkness.
From the crooning balladry of 'Istanbul' and 'Downstairs Cellar',
to the straight up rock of 'No Recovery' and 'Commercial Wheels',
Wastelands proves Big Room are as versatile and talented as they are
entertaining, serving up a unique brand of alternative rock with a
distinctly Australian flavour. Recorded in the rural surrounds of
Orroroo, Big Room take you on a long and dark journey into the very
heart of Australia. Full of sweeping guitars and vivid imagery, Wastelands
is refined oz-rock with all the sincerity and none of the cheese".
May 30 2002 - Wastelands - Review by Penny
Pappas of Rip It Up
"A culmination of 10 years writing and producing,
local band Big Room present their debut CD Wastelands. Wastelands
by title and Wastelands by feel. By that I mean throughout the Australian
rock CD are sounds that conjure up images of the desolate nature of
the outback and beyond. The CD was recorded in Orroroo and that itself
has had an influence in the overall sound. The tracks produced by
Big Room have a political undertone that is more about social commentry
and observations rather blatant political agendas. Like the title
track says, 'dead cit, big city, destroy the place. Lead poison, all
pure with electricity to boot,' their messages are clear and ring
true. This CD is filled to the brim with a unique Australian flavour
with big rock sounds with messages in Commercial Wheels (akin to sounds
of Midnight Oil) but also know how to tone the aggressive feel down
with ballad type tracks such as Istanbul and Downstairs Cellar. Big
Room create tracks with insightful lyrics with a dark, eerie almost
barren impression - Nu Ozrock?"
